Other 'Beauty and the Beast' Pilot Gets a Casting Director
Other 'Beauty and the Beast' Pilot Gets a Casting Director By Pete Keeley January 30, 2012 Photo by Disney Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" Every pilot season, there's always a few similar-sounding projects that get set up at different networks, and this year is no different.Last week we wrote about the CW's "Beauty and the Beast" pilot, a reboot of the '80s Ron Perlman-Linda Hamilton TV series, which is being cast by Sherman/Knight. But the CW isn't the only network in the beauty/beast business, as ABC also gave an order to a project of that name. Details on the exact nature of ABC's version are scarce, but it seems to be in the "modern re-imagining" vein. There's a beauty, there's a beast, but it's fresh and new! Anyhow, ABC's "Beauty and the Beast" (both projects still have the same title, which will most likely not be the case in the event both pilots get series orders) is being cast by Deb Aquila at Aquila/Wood. No word on a start date for this project yet. 'Maniac' Shot Entirely From Elijah Wood's Perspective
Elijah Wood is well accustomed to getting his crazy on. Please see his disturbing turn as feel-no-pain and claw-all-limbs-off serial killer Kevin in "Sin City" for more, or check out his dog-talking ways on "Wilfred" for further reference. But when it comes to his work in the upcoming remake of "Maniac," Wood's brand of insanity falls more in line with the murderous Kevin than the comparatively sane Ryan Newman. Wood stars in the updated version of the 1980 horror film as Frank Zito, a NY City loner who serves as landlord of a small apartment complex by day and stalks the streets to kill women by night. Wood's turn as Zito is bound to be very different from the late Joe Spinell's cult classic version of the character, not just because of their physical differences, but also because director Alejandre Aja has apparently opted to shoot "Maniac" entirely from Wood's own perspective. "[It's] entirely in POV," Wood revealed to MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival, where he's busy promoting "Celeste And Jesse Forever." "You only ever see me in reflections and occasionally there are out-of-body experiences where you see more of me." Wood added that while he's not a fan of remakes in general, it was the "very different approach" that Aja has taken to this version of "Maniac" that made him bite. "I normally don't love the notion of remakes," he said. "I've said that I'm averse to it, especially in horror films. But the approach was so different and so unique that I was really intrigued. It was fun." Tell us what you think of Wood's "Maniac" news in the comments section and on Twitter!

ASC taps five for best feature noms
For only the second time in its 26 years of handing out awards, the American Society of Cinematographers nominated two directors of photography among its five feature nominees who shot their films entirely on digital: Robert Richardson, whose photography on "Hugo" using the ARRI Alexa also reps the first 3D inclusion in the category, as well as Jeff Cronenweth, who used the RED EPIC in shooting David Fincher's remake of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."The ASC, whose 300, invitation-only members have always been strong proponents of film as the superior visual format, also nominated "The Tree of Life's" Emmanuel Lubezki, whose photography on the Terrence Malick film has dominated the critics organizations d.p. winners so far, as well as Hoyt Van Hoytema for Tomas Alfredson's "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and Guillaume Schiffman's b&w cinematography for Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist."The winner will be announced at the ASC Awards gala at the Hollywood and Highland Grand Ballroom on Feb. 12."These five cinematographers have created works of art that serve the story and the director's vision in unique and engaging ways," said ASC awards commitee chair Richard Crudo in a statement. In 2008, the ADC's nominees included "Slumdog Millionaire" (Anthony Dod Mantle) and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (Claudio Miranda), both digitally shot.Regarding Schiffman's work, it's worth noting that two out of the last three nominees for b&w cinematography -- Christian Berger for "The White Ribbon" and Roger Deakins for "The Man Who Wasn't There" -- went on to win the award."Hugo" represents Richardson's 10th nomination by the organization, while Cronenweth was recognized last year for "The Social Network" and Lubezki won in 2007 for "Children of Men." Schiffman and Van Hoytema, who was one of Variety's 10 Cinematographers to Watch in 2009, are first-time nominees. Since the ASC inaugurated its awards ceremony in 1986 when Cronenweth's father, Jordan, won for "Peggy Sue Got Married," the d.p. org's winners and those of the Academy have overlapped 10 times, including four out of the last six years. And only twice in that span of time has the Oscar winner not been nominated by the ASC. Contact Steve Chagollan at steve.chagollan@variety.com
