National Film Registry 2011: 'Bambi,' 'Forrest Gump,' 'Silence of the Lambs' Added

Like a life preserver in during this purgatory week of news, the Library of Congress announced its 2011 selections for the National Film Registry, which saves works because of "their enduring significance to American Culture." Among the 25 films chosen: 'Forrest Gump,' the 1994 Best Picture winner; 'Silence of the Lambs,' the 1991 Best Picture winner; 'Bambi,' an all-time Disney classic still beloved to this day; and 'El Mariachi,' Robert Rodriguez's 1992 micro-budget indie. James Bond Producer Wants Daniel Craig for Five More Films

Hopefully Daniel Craig likes those shaken martinis. In an interview with the newspaper The People, James Bond producer Michael G. Wilson said that he wanted to see Craig appear in another five Bond films following 'Skyfall.' "Filming has gone very well and I'd love Daniel to surpass Roger's [Moore] record and do eight pictures," Wilson told the paper. Per THR, that means Craig is somehow "in talks" for five more Bond films, though that seems specious to assume at best. After all, Craig has a very full plate -- in addition to Bond, he could have two more 'Dragon Tattoo' films coming in the future -- and there is no indication anywhere that he's in active negotiations to return to Bond following the conclusion of 'Skyfall.' Disney blamed strong comparisons for sinking studio revenue, as Cars 2, Tangled, Thor, Captain America and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides didn't measure up to last year's Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland, Iron Man 2 and Princess and the Frog. With a 33 percent gain, Disney's parks and resorts segment scored the biggest improvement in operating income due to the inclusion of the Disney Dream cruise ship and higher ticket prices at the parks, where customers also spent more on food and merchandise. Disney shares rose 2.5 percent during the regular session Thursday to $34.64 and advanced another 2.6 percent in after-hours trading. O'Brien then turned his attention to the members of the audience, many of whom were dressed in Halloween costumes. Not surprisingly, more than a few fans were dressed as O'Brien. "I see a lot of Conan costumes," he said. "Hey, at least you can take yours off! I'm trapped in this!" O'Brien, who now tapes Conan in Los Angeles, continually repeated his love of NY City, and both of the episode's pre-taped bits celebrated the city. In the first, O'Brien spent the day working as a delivery boy at a Chinese restaurant with mixed results. His first delivery customer refused to accept food from him for fear of being on camera. Later, Conan couldn't find the address he was delivering to, so he gave the food away to people on the street. (He then replaced the takeout food that he'd given away with Thai soup, but the customers quickly forgave their famous delivery boy.) An American version of Norwegian bestselling crime author Jo Nesbos new TV series Occupied is being talked about, Swedish producer Marianne Gray tells me. "I want to design something that's bigger or better or funnier or more beautiful." In the absence of a whole lot of actual dramatic tension, executive producers Matt Westmore (Beauty and the Geek, The Biggest Loser) and Noah Scheinmann (Hired) rightly bet March's fertile imagination and snide sense of humor will keep viewers entertained. When one of March's assistants complains about developing a blister on his finger while cutting strips of tough fabric, March quips, "Do you know how many homeless gay people would be happy to cut up glitter canvass?" And in a hilarious aside squeezed in during a commercial break, March pulls out a blue Sharpie for a solemn moment. "I've been fascinated with Stevie Nicks for a long, long time," he explains with his staff assembled behind him. "I've written 'Stevie Nicks' inside everything I've made for the past 20 years. It blesses everything we make." In other words, if you're looking for fashion's quirky flipside of Project Runway's "go, go, go" cutthroat ambition, Mad Fashion is your show. March is completely at ease with himself and his aesthetic, and the worst that can happen here would be to deliver an outfit that misses the mark for his eccentric clientele.
