a question about the making of marley & me (MAJOR SPOILER)?

I heard the scene where Marley gets put down (SOBBED MY EYES OUT D:),
they were LITERALLY putting a dog down. In fact, it tooks 13 shots to
do and they actually killed all of the dogs (aka 13 dogs) that were
Marley in that scene because they were dying. Is that true? :(
